Some Signs and Symptoms of Poor Quality Sleep

Nightmare disorder /dream anxiety attack
Nightmares are frightening dreams that occur during REM sleep and are associated with an increase in heart rate (tachycardia), an increase in the rate of breathing(tachypnea), profuse sweating, and arousal. Most of the time, the patient remembers the scary dreams in detail and responds to soothing and comforting by a parent/caregiver.

Sleep terror disorder/night terrors
Sleep terror disorder is characterised by extreme panic and a sudden lud terrified scream dring sleep, followed by physical activities such as hitting objects or moving in and out of the bedroom. Persons with this disorder can injure themselves. They are not nightmares as there is no visual content. Most occurs during third and forut stages of Non REM sleep; with full or partial amnesia; may be accompanied by sleep walking.llll

Sleepwalking disorder
Patients wth sleepwalking disorder show complex automatic behaviour such as wandering aimlessly carrying objects wihtou any prupose, going outdoors, and performing other activities (even driving). Usually have their eyes wide open in a stare, consider them to be in deep trance, and communicate accordingly; they may mumble; howecer communication with a person who is sleepwalking is usually poor or impossible. This disorder occurs in the slow waves stages of Non REM sleep.

  • Restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder
  • Restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder are common and often coexist.
  • Restless legs syndrome often results in insomnia, whereas periodic leg movemngts disorder causes excessive daytime sleepiness.

REM sleep behaviour disorder
Patients with REM sleep behaviour disorder act out distinctly altered dreams that are vivid, intgense, action-packedd, and violent. Dream enacting behaviours including talking, yelling, punching, kicking, sitting, jumping out of bed, arm flailing and grabbing. An acute form may occur during withdrawal from ethanol or sedative-hypnotic drugs.

Narcolepsy
A chronic neurological disorder affecting about 1 in 2,000 people, thought to be genetic. Sufferers can fall asleep while working, cooking or even driving. Onset most common between ages of 10 and 25. a lifelong condition, but certain lifestyle changes and seek medical help cana reduce symptoms, improve alertness, sleep paralysis may also occur.

Sleep paralysis
A period of inabiligy to perform voluntary movements either at sleep onset or upon waking. Harmless; often associated with narcolepsy.

Sleep myoclonus
Myoclonus is a sudden, involuntary jerking of a muscle or group of muscles.. sleep myoclonus refers to the occurrence during the initial phases of sleep, especially at the moment of dropping off to sleep. Some persons with sleep myoclonus are rarely troubled by
